HOUSEPLANTS have been shown to help unsuspecting American homeowners and renters battle mold. 

Mold is a major financial and health liability, and consumers are using all the available tools to prevent it, including greenery that requires little upkeep and can be found for less than $30 at The Home Depot.

Depending on the severity, mold can cost you a pretty penny to eradicate. 

Some mold removal companies will charge around $2.50 per square foot, while other estimates range between $10 and $25 per square foot, according to Forbes.

However, the best way to deal with mold is to try to prevent it first, and that’s when plant power comes in. 

Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress.co.uk, explained: "Mold in the home is caused by excess humidity. Warm rooms, like bathrooms and kitchens are at particular risk.

"Using plants to help keep mold at bay is a practical and natural way to control humidity and moisture in your home."

In other words, certain plants reduce the humidity in the room, the culprit of mold, by absorbing the moisture through their leaves.

Bonnet recommended several plants scientifically proven to reduce mold.

The Kimberly plant will decorate your home with sword-shaped leaves, but the leaves are not limited to elegance.

It’s a $19.98 natural humidifier and a wise choice for steamy bathrooms.

But their low-maintenance reputation doesn’t mean they don’t need sunlight or enough watering.

4. SPIDER PLANT 'BONNIE'

Native to tropical South Africa, the Spider plant is known to remove harmful pollutants in the home.

Mold is one of them, and the Home Depot’s Spider Plant Bonnie, priced at $21.99, will pounce on it like a spider.

Not literally, but the thin ribbon-like strands grow upward and bend downward, delivering the look.

5. PHALAENOPSIS ORCHID

The most colorful in this list, orchids bring a more floral style to your home while still improving air quality.

The Phalaenopsis Orchid is sold for $25.24. The Home Depot says they are “surprisingly easy” to care for.

Aesthetic-wise, it is important to note that flower color will be the grower's choice based on availability.
